October 10th, 2008: The talented Jess Fink pointed me towards this video for "Take On Me" which is hilarious fun times. And then ALL ON MY OWN I found this video cutting Deep Space Nine's intro like Battlestar Galactica's. But both of these have a lot of views so maybe you've seen them already? It is hard to tell sometimes. It is really hard to tell sometimes.

Next week is a special treat! I got five really great cartoonists and I'm giving them the reigns for the week. I think you will enjoy it!

Its sad to know that the National Debt clock has run out of digits... At least the next upgrade will give it at least another 15 years before it requires another upgrade.

lol propositions
Hurray! Got my sample ballot in the mail. It's like a test I can't fail! (Yes I can.)

I'm confused about California Proposition 7 which supposedly requires electrical companies to generate 20% of their power using renewable energy sources by 2010. Which sounds like a great idea, except 34924234 people are saying it's going to crush renewable energy as we know it. So after looking up all this conflicting opinion I had to download and print out the actual text of the proposition so I could see what it said for myself.

It is kind of hilarious because Proposition 7 is eight pages long.
Proposition 8 is twelve lines long. It basically says "no fags". Oh, Prop 8, you card.

I'm disowning anybody who votes for prop 4 or 8. :|

Just kidding, I highly respect your differing opinion. (Jerk.)

EDIT: Oh okay yeah Prop 7 spontaneously disqualifies small renewable energy companies that generate less than 30 megawatts of power to be classified as...renewable energy companies. Meaning nobody has any incentive to buy power from the little guys because they legally do not count. Why? Because Prop 7 says so! Awwwesome.

Also it has a clause that at first sounds like it's made a price ceiling on energy, when in actuality it creates a price floor by making energy companies buy any energy 10% above market price or below. When I read that I was like "oh okay prices won't go above +10% :D" ...waitnolol that means prices won't go BELOW that because anything up to +10% market price legally must be bought and thus there is no incentive whatsoever to offer a lower price.

And also on the yes for Prop 7 website they padded out their supporters by listing churches. ....shouldn't you be listing people who are actually remotely related to the energy market? Is Jesus a renewable energy resource now? If I need fish and bread, I know who to call, but sorry I think Jesus is disqualified from influencing my electricity bill.

Chambers of Love: Back in my Day Edition

So, I’m plugging away on Charms for The Manual of Exalted Power—The Infernals when it hits me that I’ve got a LiveJournal entry to write today. Man, time flies when you’re in the zone.

Anywho, last Friday, I turned 40, and that got me thinking about how long I’ve been playing roleplaying games (28 years) and how many years I’ve been working in the industry professionally (10 years). That, in turn, got me thinking about the many games I’ve played in the past. I don’t know about the rest of you, but as I’ve gotten older, industry insider or no, it’s become harder to keep a gaming group together for a long period of time. In typical midlife crisis fashion, I find myself pining for the good ol’ days, when Duran Duran topped the charts and I could get in a decent Chill! campaign.

As you might have guessed from the above numbers, I’ve played a bunch of games in the past, from a myriad of different companies (many sadly defunct now): Started with the typical gateway game of D&D, then Gamma World and Boot Hill, branching off into my first superhero game Villains & Vigilantes (from whence would arise White Wolf’s own Wieck brothers and Ken Cliffe), to Chill!, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, TORG, Shadowrun, DC Heroes and Marvel Super Heroes—the list goes on and on. And then there were the White Wolf games. Man, I was hooked from the first time I saw Vampire: The Masquerade at the Gen Con where it premiered. I’d been reading if admittedly not playing Ars Magica, so I was already into the work of those involved. And from that point on, I was hooked, playing all the subsequent World of Darkness properties and chatting with the creators at cons, which led me to intern at the company and, eventually, work here full time.

Basically, that meandering if short origin of my gaming life brings me to the point of today’s LJ post. I’d like to know what brought you folk into gaming. I know that the way I do things and a lot of what I enjoy about RPGs can be traced from those that I’ve had fun playing in the past, and I bet the same is true of you. What game was your gateway in roleplaying? What game did you most enjoy playing in the past? Was it the game itself that was great or the people you were playing with, or both?

Man, I’ve so got the urge to pull out my old Pacesetter Chill! stuff and set a game to the soundtrack of Duran Duran. “Hungry like the wolf, hungry like the wolf…”

My thoughts on "that one"
Everything I know about campaigning I learned from the West Wing.
Bartlet: What's next?
Cal: The thing about saying the name.
Bartlet: I understand.
Jerry: If I could just reframe the point that Cal was making.
Bartlet: I understand the point that Cal was making. I was sitting next to him when he made it, my ears are connected to my brain just like every body else. And I'm saying what's next?
Cal: Sir, not to put my head in the lion's mouth but by saying the name of your opponent in public you're essentially giving him free advertising.
Jerry: Cal thinks you should start referring to him as "my opponent" or "the other guy"?
Bartlet: You're not afraid he's gonna make me look like I can't remember his name?
Jerry: No.
Bartlet: I am. I think it's going to make me look like I can't remember his name. I think it's going to make me look addled. I think it's going to make me look dotty. And even if it didn't make me look like those things it would remain a stupid idea. What's next? Nothing? Excellent.

sketches
done in France:

girl - I want to draw a picture where the entire point is like, really long and really pretty hair. I want to design a character with wavy, luxurious hair, the kind that's really fun to color. I am writing too much for this picture, it is just some animu face.

skull - I should spend some time just drawing detailed skulls. I think that might be fun. (This is also just a bunch of animu faces.)

MMX - Just a thumbnail. Why do I consistently draw his everything too long now?

Aegis - Sketches I was working on while doing the big Aegis print...I'm gonna go back to working on her headphone design since the one I did for the print was kind of rushed and an afterthought. I want to do a more complicated image with headphones. A 3/4 shot of them, maybe her taking them off. Be fun to try and draw the hair rustling and the headphone details and such. I need to work on being able to draw intricate details.

Lily - Even though I have long-haired characters, they're mostly chosen for their colors rather than their textural properties. Since she has mostly straight hair, the fun of coloring her hair is more in the color than in the shapes. (This is just an animu face.)

The rest were done during May conventions:

doll joints - On any given day I will draw 5 of this pose. I have still not managed to get it right.

guy yelling - WHY AM I YELLING!!

frustration - She is angry because she is drawn so badly. She is trying to rip the lineart off her head.

freckles - Randomly wanted to try inking freckles. After inking the freckles I got bored and stopped.

sketch page - Sorry I keep posting unedited sketch pages and ruining the idea that I am a good artist lol. Um, basically Zero looking really gay (I wanted to try a really girly style for fun) and a hand practice.

I should probably post something I spent more than 10 minutes on soon.

A while back Jill and I finished season 1 of Heroes. I was reluctant to go on to season 2, because I heard from many people that it was terrible, etc, and I didn't want to be disappointed. Jill has a stronger stomach for, uh, crappy entertainment (Jill, three words: "The Last Sentinel". QED. :-), so she convinced me to watch them. So over the weekend we basically watched all 11 episodes of season 2 and the first three (the only that have aired) in season 3.

We both agreed that season 2 was far from terrible. It's not the best show ever, but we didn't think it was any substantially worse than season 1. What did people think was wrong with it? season 2 spoilers follow )

lehman ceo testifies before a house committee
Lehman's Fuld testifying before a House Committee = riveting stuff.

9:53 - He gave a pretty touching speech in the beginning but then the chair slammed him with a chart that shows that he pocketed close to half a billion dollars.

The chair's question was simple: "Is that fair?"

Fuld is basically not answering that question.

9:58 - I can't believe we're giving $700 billion to these guys. Which, by the way, is a completely arbitrary number. They just wanted a "really big" number to pour on Wall Street to stop it from plummeting. I was mostly undecided as to whether I wanted the bill to pass or not, but now it's pretty clear that there is plenty of money in these fat cats' pockets that could've gone back into their companies.

10:01 - Christ he legally has all that money and there's not a thing anybody can do to take it from him. And yet the government and thus the taxpayers are all paying to bail these companies out. I can't believe it.

10:05 - These guys sure are being nice to him. I guess it won't help to roast him.

10:06 - I am liking watching this live Dow box they have on CNN. They should change the acronym to HSYA (How Screwed You Are: -500!)

10:07 - omgomgomg I can't wait for the Dow to drop more so I can seriously go IT'S UNDER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...I am waiting to do this joke so bad oh my god

10:18 - Ugh fuck you CNN.

Next Guy: *starts asking his questio-*
CNN: YOU ARE WATCHING THE DRAMA UNFOLD BLAHBLAHBLAH
Me: *switches to C-Span*

10:20 - Is it sad that this is basically men in ties fashion hour for me, too? Mmm nice cuff links there Congressman Turner.

10:24 - tl;dl: nobody understands how economics work except for the people actually making fat cash off basically imaginary real estate values. I am entirely certain the vast majority of Americans do not understand anything these people are discussing beyond "lulz the economy is bad these days somehow???" It makes me sad that the very very clear cause and effect here is completely beyond the mental grasp of most people.
I want to place a little blame on the people who sought out these subprime mortgages to buy a house they couldn't afford, though the blame ultimately lies on the banks that gave them out. Bullshit that nobody could see this coming- anybody paying any attention noticed at least 5 years ago. Even I knew about it AND I SPEND 90% OF MY TIME WATCHING ANIME.
lol @ people who don't pay attention to anything going on around them because it's all "politics" and then wonder HAY WHY CAN'T I AFFORD RENT?? :(

10:37 - Why do they keep congratulating him for taking responsibility? Absolutely every answer he's given so far has been "nuh uh"

10:42 - Um. How can you blame the lack of regulations for your bank's downfall? The regulations are there to keep you from being retarded. So basically without a fence saying "LOL PLEASE STOP THROWING MONEY NOWHERE" you did it anyways and now you're blaming the government for not building a fence to stop you?

"I think I made the fire too real for them. Probably failed to highlight the sale."
Well, I'm sorry for posting yet another non-entry, but I'm staring down a couple of opportunities that may result in the staging of my oft-delayed escape from the midwest. I'll post more details once things are more finalized, but in the meantime, I'm throwing more weight overboard. I've been selling a lot of my stuff piecemeal on Craigslist over the past year, but the only way I'm ever going to make a dent in my piles and piles of junk is by listing it en masse on eBay. I just finished up a trial round of auctions and things went pretty well, so I'll be putting everything else on the block over the next week or two, but I figured I'd put the updated list here and on a few message boards I frequent in case anyone would like to pick it over.

[info]boco, I'll be passing through Indy and Lafayette in a week. I've set aside most of the items you had expressed interest in, besides the Neo Geo, so if you still want any of those or anything else on this list, let me know and I can possibly detour to meet you if you're still in Indiana somewhere.

October 3rd, 2008: So guys last year a guy named Dr. McMuffin wrote A Dinosaur Comics Opera! He turned this comic into an opera. AMAZING. And it's being performed TONIGHT. Oh yes. Liederwölfe (that's a link to their MySpace page and they sound awesome) is performing it next Friday, October 3rd, in Montreal, as part of the Pop Montreal independent music festival! How rad is that? Answer: totally rad. You should come! Here are the DEETS:

When: Friday, October 3rd, 11 p.m.

Where: Les Saints, 30 Ste-Catherine Ouest, Montreal, Canada

How much?: Pay What You Can

Who are these Liederwölfe people, in press-release format? Liederwölfe is a group of professional musicians who bring vocal music from the past 731 years to any venue, from pubs to parking lots to palaces. In existence for nearly three years, Liederwölfe powers on in its mission: to get out of the concert hall and bring classical vocal music to intelligent and curious music-lovers on their own terms - pint in hand. From barroom opera-cabaret to live art installation to contemporary music festivals and community fundraisers, Liederwölfe has collaborated with such local artists as Sherwin Tjia, Chinese alt-rockers Shanghai Triad, visual artists Mathieu Lefevre and Belinda Campbell, burlesque artist Miss Sugarpuss, and folk-pop dreamcatcher Courtney Wing.

Argh. They had to do something to not make it a simple no-brainer superset, didn't they? No playing GBA games, no using the Rumble Pak, no transferring Pokémon, no Guitar Hero DS in current form, no unlocking things in DS games by having the proper GBA game plugged in.

In other Nintendo conference news

+Wii will finally have the capability to work with downloaded games directly on SD card. Not sure why such a solution has taken so long, or why it's still yet about half a year until this is supposed to happen. Actually the translated information doesn't say things will run straight from an SD card, but that it will be made "easy to copy to Wii". So this may not yet be a Good solution, but a Less Ass one than having to go several levels deep into menus to delete and copy things? Details needed.

+Punch-Out Wii!
+Trace Memory for Wii. I wonder how it will turn out, though; this is really the sort of game that worked well in small spurts on DS.
+Samurai Warriors 3 for Wii! Finally a real Musou game for a Nintendo system.
+Due to Wii userbase being so much bigger than GCN's, they're rereleasing some GCN games on Wii, with few changes but to the controls. Starting with Pikmin and DK Jungle Beat. Both should decently adapt to the new controls... though without a mic I wonder how "clap" will be done for Jungle Beat.
+Mario & Luigi 3
+Yet another new Tales Wii, though this one a "main entry", whatever that's worth these days.
+New DS WarioWare with some sort of microgame editing functionality?

----------

In non-conference Nintendo news...

A new Crystal Chronicles was announced (Echoes of Time) for both Wii and DS was announced, with cross-platform online play. Good idea! The Wii version just displays the graphics from the DS version, with the screens set side by side. Stupid idea! So it's for people who have a Wii but not a DS, or have a DS but hate small screens so much they'd rather play the same thing exclusively on their TV?

If the Wii version had graphics/audio of its own, or even just played the DS version in highe resolution with a rearranged user interface and display, it would be a much more interesting product and still be perfectly compatible with the DS version online. Hell, it would probably tempt some people to get both versions.

October 1st, 2008: This seems kinda publicity-stunty, but Collins has come up with a list of words they're going to drop from their dictionary. Not the dictionary, their dictionary: we all know the dictionary is the OED. But in any case, a news story with a list of awesome words facing extinction (from the print edition) (of one dictionary I've never read) was STILL too much to pass up. I call "fubsy"! "Compossible" is also a great made-up sounding word that I hope to work into my speech from now on. I think doing this while still being understood is... compossible?

In any case, Collins said they'll be monitoring the media for use of these words, so check it out, Collins! I HOPE YOU READ WEBCOMICS??
