The Scripture of the Maiden and the Dust [21 Jun 2009|12:20am]
Once, there was a maiden...
...who learned that the faster she ran, the faster she could run.
Thus, running consumed her,
until one day, she flew beyond the ending of her life.
"And here I thought it'd last forever," she said.
"But-"
"There's always an ending," said the run.

Drank the Kool-Aid [01 Jun 2009|07:49pm]
So I'm posting this on my new Mac.

What apps should I get to make my life easier? I've basically never used a Mac before so I'm lost about things like IM clients, torrenters, etc. Anything you like?

Specifically I need
-an image viewer I can use for comics and browsing (so I need to be able to flip pages with a single keypress). For Windows I use Irfanview, which is kind of a stripped-down ACDSee. Preview might be it, but again, I don't know Mac so I don't know if there's something better.
-a text editor, especially one that has fixed-width support. Ideally one that acts as a grid like Dos Edit. I make lots of tables and charts when I'm thinking about things so it really needs to be easy to type things out in space, as if I'm writing them on paper.
-a minimalist pixel-based image editor, mostly for working with paletted images (like sprites). It must be pixel-based or have a real pixel mode. Bonus points if it can display a grid, extra bonus points if the grid can be arbitrary (8x8 blocks for example).
-I can use the OS itself for working with archives, folders, etc right? Anything special I need to do to use tagging and metadata?

Edit: I got an iPod Touch too so similar recommendations there would also be helpful.

A dream in which turned-to-earth [13 May 2009|09:06pm]
Last night I had a dream where I was studying Realm history in school and there was a pop quiz.

One of the questions was about a famous pirate who singlehandedly destroyed an island community of Dragon Kings.. the details were sketchy since the question was identifying the pirate and the year it happened. Also I got the sense that the pirate killed every individual Dragon King but the terminology actually used was "turned to earth" (all of the questions were pseudo-poetry). My (wrong) answer was "Peleps ummm what's that word Kaizoku" and then I giggled because who can take that name seriously. But it wasn't a Kaizoku I guess.

There was also a short philosophical essay we had to read, and we had to identify the author of the essay and the author he was responding to and then answer some reading comprehension questions about the essay. And the essay was the first proposal for the "motes-as-HP simplification". Which replaced a much more complicated elemental theory of motes - I got that part right at least. Apparently one of the main advantages of the simplification was a mote-trading formula which let you easily convert measures from the 20-weight system to the standard 5-weight system (no, I don't know what that means), although the downside is that motes-as-HP really only applies to certain situations and you lose a lot of metamechanical support for whatever you're trying to do. (note: I did not think it was ridiculous that "HP" was a term or that "motes-as-HP" was seriously presented and did not break character).

Anyway I had arrived at class late so I didn't have time to finish the test and one of the two instructors took my unfinished test and was like 'this is what you get for being late' and started grading it right in front of me to kind of rub it in my face and was like 'see you lost 10 points there, and 10 points there...' and I responded "I don't care about points, I care about being right." And then he got scared and kind of went to the other side of the room to deal with someone else. So probably I was a DB and the instructor was patrician.

Also I had a bunch of stuffed animals with me? Like, five or six, and weird clothing. And everyone would avoid looking directly at me. Maybe they were supposed to be summoned demons, I don't know. It seemed perfectly natural that I was supposed to have them around and that everyone else should respect and fear me.

Anyway that was my dream of being a DB maybe-sorcerer in a Realm school, learning about motes-as-HP and a pirate who "turned to earth" an entire community of Dragon Kings.

News you can Use [22 Sep 2008|12:05pm]
Megaman 9 is out, I just finished downloading it

EDIT

I HAVE NOW PLAYED IT and it is the best in the series.

I can't beat [the final boss] though. I used 4 E-tanks and 1 M-tank and I still couldn't beat him. But it takes less than an hour to get there so I'm not too discouraged, I'll just need to try harder. And hey, if I beat him I'll probably get a good time on the leaderboards since last I checked the times ranged from 40 minutes to an hour 40 heavily leaning on the top end and I got to [the boss] in like 50 minutes and gave up (last time) at like 1:10 so if I beat him I'll probably have slot #5...

This weekend [02 Sep 2008|08:01pm]
This weekend I watched the first 31 episodes of Touch, read the first two books of Amber, played the first disc of Metal Gear Solid, broke my new shoes, and didn't get a job.

EDIT I just found out that a game I thought was canceled 2 years ago is actually being released on the 11th, and a demo went up yesterday.

In an RPG, do you want to level up, or do you want to be as powerful as you wanted to be from the beginning?

Today at Gamestop.. [03 May 2008|05:36pm]
So endril and I went shopping today. We got some neat stuff - No More Heroes, Draglade, Honey+Clover, Initial D, you know.

At Gamestop, there was some guy who was trying to convince everyone in the store to stop buying games forever. He was a piracy advocate who was actively trying to get the people who wanted to buy DS games to instead download them off the internet, because "even $20 is too much, I only make $8 an hour" and "the CEOs of those companies make billions of dollars a year already" and "I already bought the hardware for the system so that's support enough right?". He was bewildered at the fact that most companies lose money on hardware, didn't understand economies of scale, didn't understand small publishers with limited print runs like Atlus, didn't understand the economics of game development, etc. We argued for like an hour before he got fed up and left.

Minireview: LOVE MY LIFE [28 Apr 2008|05:04pm]
This is a really good movie, though the gratuitous sex scene at the end really doesn't belong (OK, it does, but does it need to be so long?)
Highly recommended, A++, would watch again

IN OTHER NEWS

I applied for about 7 jobs but I doubt I'll get any of them. Oh well.

I've been rereading Romance of the Three Kingdoms and also watching the TV series and also been taking extensive notes on characters, events and places... because I'm going to run a Three Kingdoms game in Weapons of the Gods. Of course it won't have all the same characters and I don't expect the plot to stay even remotely similar (since I'm giving the players a lot of freedom) but I hope I can do justice to the source material.

So my laptop is dead. [12 Mar 2008|03:26pm]
It has a problem that is very fixable but to fix it also requires complete disassembly of the entire laptop because I need to get to the motherboard. The AC power jack thing is soldered onto the motherboard, see, and normal wear and tear will eventualy break that solder connection. So the solution is to open the whole laptop up, get to it, and either replace it with something that won't break from wear and tear or re-solder it and have that last for another 2-5 years like this laptop has already done. Total repair cost is something like $2.50 plus the difficulty of complete disassembly so I'll probably have to do it but I really really don't want to. In the meantime I can very occasionaly use battery power to have a few minutes of time online but that's all.
